Ritual: Inner Work for Social Justice
Dismantling white supremacy and underlying attitudes that drive it is an ongoing process. There is the outer work of building economic, education, health care, shelter, and food justice which is crucial to building a more equitable society. But there is also the inner work of examining and releasing the racist stories, images, ideologies, and assumptions that have been lodged in our brains and bodies. For those of us raised in a racist society that values profits over people (e.g. all of us born in the U.S.) we are called to examine these stories lodged deep in our unconscious so that we can release and replace them.
This week's offering is a ritual based on the work of Resmaa Menakem, expert on trauma and race and author of My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies. We'll use some of Menakem's somatic methods to do the inner work of what he calls "Somatic Abolitionism" - examining our unconscious stories, images, and beliefs and replacing them with new stories that promote healing and justice.
Please dress in comfortable close, bring an unlit candle and lighter, as well as a notebook or journal and something you enjoy writing with. Digital is fine if that's your preferred medium.
